This report is a systematic presentation of how the government continuously defends and supports convicted war criminals. The research is focused on the analysis of different forms of political support and affirmation received by four war criminals who are the most active in Serbian public life – Vladimir Lazarević, Nikola Šainović, Momčilo Krajišnik and Veselin Šljivančanin. The Report covers the period from their return from prison until December 2017.

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights strongly condemns the reactions of the President of Croatia, Prime Minister, Parliamentary Speaker and members of the Croatian Government and Croatian Parliament whose statements show clear and unambiguous solidarity with war criminals, deny their responsibility for war crimes and depreciate the facts established in the judgments of the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia.

On Thursday afternoon, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights had a meeting with Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) at their office in Zagreb.

Between September 13 and 16, young people from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro met in Vukovar within Youth Initiative for Human Rights’ regional exchange programme implemented with support of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Europe House Vukovar, French Institute in Croatia and Italian Cultural Institute from Zagreb.

The Youth Initiative for Human Rights sent on Friday to the Government of Croatia, Ministry of Public Administration, parliamentary committees and parliamentary groups a proposal for comprehensive, lawful and sustainable solution with regard to the disputable memorial plaque in Jasenovac. The Ministry of Public Administration can annul the registration of the Volunteer Association of the Croatian Defence Forces (UDHOS) of Zagreb as soon as on Monday. The Government can than lawfully remove the plaque installed in the vicinity of the Jasenovac Memorial Centre.

For the second consecutive year, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, with support of more than 400 citizens, demands that the Government of the Republic of Croatia offer an apology to all the victims and families of victims of war crimes and human rights violations that occurred during and immediately after Operation Storm in August 1995.
