During his first official visit to the Republic of Croatia, Olufemi Elias, Secretary of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) had a meeting with the representatives of civil society organisations active in the area of transitional justice in Croatia.

At the meeting held on the premises of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Zagreb, potential areas of cooperation of Croatia’s civil society with IRMCT were discussed, as well as CSO activities in the area of transitional justice and the possibility of opening ICTY Information Centre in Croatia. Mr. Elias supported the work of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights and other organisations in advocating justice for victims, transitional justice mechanisms and promotion of the facts about the war crimes and human rights violations from the wars of the 1990s.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals has succeeded the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in prosecuting war crimes after these two units were closed down in 2015 and 2017. The IRMCT maintains the legacy of these two pioneer ad hoc international tribunals and strives to apply the best practice in the area of international criminal justice.
